So it was a Wednesday and that means car day! Andrew goes into Dusseldorf for work on Wednesdays and since driving there and taking the train are the same about of time, he chooses the train to be able to relax or get a jump start on some phone calls or work. So with keys in hand, Alisa and I loaded up the kids and headed out for our day trip. (For those that don't know, our friend Alisa from Seattle had been touring Europe and we offered for her to come stay with us a couple months to help with the kids and she graciously accepted).
I had decided on Trier for our destination. It was 2 hours by car, not too bad, and it sounded really cool. Trier is the oldest city in Germany. It was founded by the Romans in 17 BC and several structures still servive. One of the largest, and main attraction, is the Porta Negra. The only surviving Roman gate left from the city wall. We toured that first and took the kids walking through all three levels of it. Next we walked around the town square called "Cathedral City". Very cute charming center and buildings. The old bishop's palace, a lovely pink, is now an H&M clothing store. So little things like that are kinda ironic, somewhat sad, but still better that the building has been preserved rather than torn down for a moder department store building.
The children started getting a little cranky after 2 hours of strolling around, so we decided we better head back after we got to see two main attractions. It is definately a place, like many other things we've seen, that we could come back to and spend a few days. I personally love old Greek and Roman things. It was also a good thing that we headed back when we did, on the way back up north, there was a lot of snow that had been falling all day, then snowing more while we drove. But, we again returned home safe and sound.
